An infection causes an immune response; some of the antibodies produced attack mitochondria (which, after all, originated as bacteria) and make energy metabolism less efficient, causing fatigue.

How do antibodies target mitochondria? Mitochondria are inside your cells. Can antibodies get in there?

some mitochondria are outside the cells. I don't know if there's a way for antibodies to get in cells.
