One big difference is that I consistently expect bigger gaps between “far-mode” stuff I learned in books and “near-mode” stuff I can observe firsthand than Andrew does.

My impression is that people who are *more* authoritarian than me are *less* literal-minded and *less* likely to think authority figures are literally saying true things, they just think that doesn’t matter much relative to social harmony and going along to get along.

Hmm, so there's a reverse correlation between literally believing authority figures and valuing social cohesion? I can see that. If you think everyone else is going along just to get along, you'll have less strong beliefs about what they actually think.

And humoring an authority figure is also distinct from being compliant. This really shows up when you work, as I do, with both English & Dutch colleagues. I've learned to parse the polite English ways of indicating someone is full of it.
