Is there any reason why it’s not physically possible to focus a current from an external headset to a location inside the brain? For a non-invasive equivalent of deep brain stimulation? Too much scattering?

For the waves to do anything, they must be grounded out by something. In a radio, this is your antenna. It must be 1/2 as long as the wavelength, minimum. The only thing to ground it in the brain is the water. That's microwaves, and just produces heat (thus, the microwave).

Which, probably needless to say, shouldn't be done to sensitive nerve tissue, since it won't actually produce the intended result (electrical differential at a point in the brain). Last time I used this knowledge in seriousness, my adult child was in diapers, so caveat emptor.
