Potential downsides of understanding people’s motivations to do “bad” things (however you define “bad”):
Really? If you usually explain people’s behavior as “they must have had a good reason” or “it must have been circumstances beyond their control”, aren’t you less bitter than if you think they had “low motives”?

hmm, I think I started out on the more bitter end of that spectrum and have learned to use the "circumstances beyond their control" narrative more over time. so I guess I have the opposite journey as you. either way being able to consciously pick a narrative is definitely helpful
