How can it be that, in this day and age, in the western world, most heroic narratives — which usually shape or reflect deeply held views about ethics — assume an honor culture while, at the same time most of its content (e.g revenge, retribution) generally seem anathema nowadays?
I’m saying people *like* vengeance, and never stopped; if you tried to tell a story about what actually happens in the contemporary world, it wouldn’t be any fun.

It's not so much that they *liked* vengeance, it that they think it was honorable, commendable. I think they still largely do but it's a social taboo and there's some cognitive dissonance going on.
