How can it be that, in this day and age, in the western world, most heroic narratives — which usually shape or reflect deeply held views about ethics — assume an honor culture while, at the same time most of its content (e.g revenge, retribution) generally seem anathema nowadays?
No, that wasn’t my intent! I mean “I know this feels like I’m moving the goalposts by saying Taken is set in a fantasy universe, but I still think that’s true.”

Any piece of fiction is going to have elements of fantasy. My point is precisely that the archetypes we see in these fantasies usually reflect moral norms. The fact that Taken is set in the present shows that the presence of vengence is not mere historical realism.

I’m saying people *like* vengeance, and never stopped; if you tried to tell a story about what actually happens in the contemporary world, it wouldn’t be any fun.
