I am interested in funding a study on cholesterol & what really leads to cardiovascular death w/ a few friends. I’ve never done it before & would be starting from scratch, do you know anyone who I could learn from & where to start?

I don't have a preexisting writeup on cholesterol, but my working method is to try to formulate specific answerable questions and then iteratively check the research literature to see if someone answered them.

In this case, for instance: There are probably correlational studies out there that connect cholesterol with risk of death from cardiovascular disorders. The very first, baseline, question is "is there even a correlation?"

Secondly, we have drugs that directly lower cholesterol, though they may also have other effects. Do *they* reduce risk of heart disease? Is the risk reduction proportional to the amount lowered by cholesterol?

What about genetic disorders (in humans or animals) that cause unusually high or low cholesterol? Do those go along with heart disease? Always?

As a side question, does dietary cholesterol intake actually have much effect on the level of cholesterol in the blood? (iirc the answer is no!)
