Don’t let the title throw you off: it’s not just applicable to people who had dramatically horrible childhoods. The book’s thesis is that people can get fucked up by parents who were “merely” emotionally distant or verbally cruel.

i like the idea but i mean is it reasonable that people generally could be so fragile - we've existed in some pretty rough environments!

You can *survive* just fine while being full of motivated cognition, lashing out at people who challenge your ego, avoiding things you fear, etc. You just aren’t in optimal emotional health.

Humans evolved to survive lots of things that still count as damage: parasites, famines, wounds, etc. Perfect health != the average state of a person’s body. Same with minds.
