huh, either this is a claim that "people of European descent have a different ileopsoas than everyone else" or it's using "whiteness" to mean something other than genes?
i read it as using "whiteness" to refer to a specific pattern of cultural trauma and i thought that was obvious but i guess not
I wanted to confirm, because I've sometimes seen "whiteness" used in ways which would be kinda mean if it meant genes but less mean if it meant culture, and this is an especially clear example of "maybe they mean culture?"
my very strong prior is that race words refer to demographic descriptors; i.e. the U.S. Census may change the definition of what counts as "white" as cultural norms shift, but *you*, an individual, don't get to change which box you tick on the Census.
If there's a (niche, activist) meaning of "white" which is something one can *stop* being through one's actions, I just want to confirm that it's different than the "which box you tick on the Census" definition, because I feel like equivocation happens between them.
According to the Census bureau, you totally get to pick: https://www.census.gov/mso/www/training/pdf/race-ethnicity-onepager.pdf …
"The Census Bureau defines race as a person’s self-identification with one or more social groups."
I know what you're talking about, but it's not bad luck that the example you pointed to doesn't work; it's really important that the subversive narrative IS the official narrative, it just doesn't agree with the predominant PRETENSE that "white" is a well-defined ancestry group.
It would be real weird and maybe racist to actually mark something other than “white” on the census though, right? Maybe “other” would be ok, I suppose. But does anybody actually *want* the people currently known as white to switch to saying they’re not white?
