It doesn't have to be an altruistic motive -- wanting to personally go to Mars or live longer is a selfish motive! As is wanting to work on interesting problems with fun people! But it's intrinsic interest in the thing for its own sake rather than just ROI.

Yep. Not sure I know the answer, but I guess that's what the BARPA proposal seeks to achieve (here in the UK) and that's a step in the right direction I think.

I‘ve been thinking about this a lot. It’s rather unfortunate that right now the most immediately financially rewarding choice a smart college graduate can make is to work at Facebook or Google essentially manipulating people into clicking ads.
