I’m still uncertain how true this is. The *strong* theory that there was *no* evolutionary pressure for language to contain true info is clearly false, but there also seem to be direct evolutionary incentives to deceive.

I have more doubts that there’s evolutionary incentive to *be* deceived (including avoiding knowledge of one’s errors).

And writers were willing to speak of the necessity or virtue of lying in some circumstances (Machiavelli; the Iliad, in a different way) long before anyone glorified *being* deceived.
