I guess you’d feel those were bigger deals if you’re close to the people harmed. I know that stuff happens but I’m comparing to worse alternatives. What do you think of the theory that entertainment absorbs energy that might be otherwise used for war or civil unrest?

This is a really interesting take; thank you! I will ruminate upon it. My first thought is: political instincts evolved for life in Dunbar-sized bands can be massively maladaptive when scaled up. (Any thoughts about that?)

I genuinely don't know if macro-scale stuff (like which politicians get elected) is made worse by the IoB than it was before.

I liked most of this essay because it reframes the culture wars as an entertainment industry in which a few players are professionals who make their living in that industry. I think that's accurate. I also don't think it's a big problem.
