The biggest misconception about medicine is that it can meaningfully "treat" disease in the aged and chronically ill. That people like Ezekiel Emanuel's father, with an inoperable brain tumor, are any better off in hospitals than they would be at home. They're not.

Now, if you accept that reality, what is there to do? First, stop hurting the people who are beyond cure, and switch to less-invasive palliative care; and in parallel, do more research to find ways to keep people from getting to the point where no medicine can help.
