Well, by the same argument you make that, say, an arachnophobe could overcome her fear of spiders if you put a gun to her head, it's equally true that a family member could learn to accept things like "expressions of distress" or "socially unconventional behavior".

What constitutes an unacceptable "burden" on the sane is no more immutable than what constitutes an unacceptably high stress or effort for the insane. Both respond to incentives.
