I think Dostoevsky's pain is very male, very much about the impossibility of achievement in a morally or socially perfect way. it's not "psychological balancing" it's *exactly* what you'd expect. the moderate, accepting, tolerant-of-humanity-exactly-as-it-is attitude is going to coincide with a fair amount of domestic violence, though always safely within what society won't punish.
