Yeah, this. I don't always agree with *who* gets canceled and *why*, but the alternative -- "don't voice disapproval or voluntarily disassociate when you believe something to be unethical" -- is a lot worse.https://twitter.com/ArthurB/status/1204469207825616896 …

Let me put it this way: the US criminal justice system is such a shitshow that most people hesitate to use it, out of justified concern that it will both ignore real crimes and use totally disproportionate force and cruelty against the accused.

The "court of public opinion" is epistemically terrible compared to a real trial; but most accusations of crimes never go to trial! If you include the whole process of seeking legal justice, starting with "call the police", I'm not sure it's more fair or humane than "canceling."

Sure, I mean if you want to completely dismiss someone having a conversation with you because you think they're on the "other side" of the culture trench from you then it's your call. It's interesting how even the tiniest amount of push-back elicited such a strong response tho

Not at all, we can have that discussion in private. I value interesting disagreement, but public twitter is not a good place to discuss controversial political topics.

"Cutting someone off from economic or cultural integration" sounds pretty binary, when it's actually an emergent property of many people choosing to voluntarily disassociate with a person. The alternative would be to force them to tolerate someone against their will?

It's also necessary to clarify the exact causal chain that leads to someone being fired for being against 'gay marriage'. (It's just marriage, btw). No amount of angry tweeting could get a stranger to fire you. Instead, your institution chooses to sacrifice you to save face.

I think the misunderstanding here is "right" versus "privilege". Some people are so used to getting a certain level of benefits from the world, that even a smallest withdrawal of those benefits looks like a "punishment". It's an entirely self-absorbed worldview.
