My husband pointed out something really useful the other day: a lot of stereotypical marital fights (about “you’re not pulling your weight” or “you don’t appreciate all the work I do”) are really about a resource constraint: your household does not have enough money.

This is good to realize because it means you can be on the same team (and united in opposition to the forces making the Rent Too Damn High.)

I’ve felt for a long time that middle- and upper-middle-class people are in denial about having money constraints, about admitting we can’t afford things, or making decisions based on money, or worrying about money. It all gets sublimated.

Very true, but these are just the first frontier of marital fights. Once money is no longer constrained, then you graduate to problems of self-actualization

That’s the thing — who are these couples without money constraints? They’ve got to be vanishingly rare.

All stress is from resource constraint. Even literal stress in physics.

More useful is to map out each other’s personality types relative to each other and guess what type of quarrels those two types of personalities would have. You 2 probably have the same periodically. Eg: last minute types will always stress out planners on day of travel.

Learned in S. psychology a huge breaker of relationships is not being on the same page financially. As in having different spending habits and ideas about money. Not so much “how much” but what do we do with what we have.
