I’ve been told I’m using the word wrong if I use it with definition a.) and that the word “ideology” inherently *means* “unprincipled, inconsistent grab bag”, that for instance Marxists would not call Marxism an ideology. Have any of you heard this usage?

This is very hard, because the real answer is I motte/bailey between a and b in an unprincipled way.

Consistency is hard to find, but a grab bag is too random.

Voted same, if only because I usually end up using a for my ingroup and b for my outgroup.

I'd say its a grab bag of tribal markers which are used as a guiding set of values, that pretend to be consistent, and may or may not actually be. Often the actual consistency varies on who exactly has the ideology and how much they've thought about it.

I use it to mean “the things you believe because someone/something else is pulling your strings”—so almost entirely polemically :/ https://twitter.com/a_fellow_of/status/1200497614615126023?s=20 …https://twitter.com/a_fellow_of/status/1200497614615126023 …

More A than B, though I would emphasize the subjective sense of worldview coherence over objective coherence. You can achieve the same feeling of apparent coherence by habitually dismissing threatening counterexamples.

I wish I lived in a world where I got to mean “a” but usually I have to mean “b”
