There’s a reasonable chance you’ll pee yourself occasionally for the rest of your life.

You have a double-digit percent chance of getting diabetes while pregnant. Sometimes you stay that way.

You may have to go off your regular medication if it’s bad for the fetus. I’ve seen this be Not Fun for friends with ordinarily well-managed mental illnesses.

Ever had to ration your energy to the degree of “if I get in the bathtub, will I be able to get out again”? I did!

It’s pretty normal to shit yourself, puke, and tear right through your vaginal labia while giving birth. It’s amazing how kind and gracious the nurses are about cleaning it all up.

I had a healthy, safe, very much wanted pregnancy, and I hope to do it all over again. But it is pretty epically uncomfortable and gross in the best case.

All husbands should be as nice about it as my husband. When I was too embarrassed to ask the pharmacist about what laxatives were safe, he went around singing, “My wife’s having trouble pooping, can you help” and threatened to sing it to the pharmacist if I didn’t ask.

The best thing you can do for pregnant people & new parents is to have a sense of humor about gross bodily fluids. You can’t always fix the bodily discomfort, but you can defuse the embarrassment around it.

I will say that pregnancy had upsides for me as an experience, even aside from getting an awesome baby at the end. I’ve been lucky enough to be in good health my whole life, so I had no “being sick” skills before pregnancy; how to pace myself, how to communicate my physical needs

It’s an actual skill to get yourself to say out loud “I cannot walk that far, can we stop and rest?” And to do it with good grace instead of pushing yourself as far as you possibly can and then snapping at everyone.

Almost all of us will end up, at least in old age, with bodies that hurt and don’t work right and force us to ask for others’ help and patience. Pregnancy lets those of us who start out nondisabled prepare for that aspect of our own mortality, in a mostly safe context.

The fun part is that dealing with your own physicality can open up new pleasures. I got into cooking when I was pregnant because morning sickness made me a picky eater. I got a more sensitive sense of smell and started enjoying perfume.
