Better phrasing: If you make historically significant intellectual or cultural contributions, you’re probably not mostly motivated by enjoying the suffering of others.

Also, the meme of the “evil genius” is heavily colored by anti-intellectualism. Actual Machiavelli was not that evil, just unflattering.

Also there’s a tendency for child prodigies to also be ethically precocious (more empathetic & bothered by injustice) & you’d predict this if you thought ethics came from true insights.
