Student: "My career ambition to be an ethical technologist" Me: "Why do we need more ethics in tech?" "Just cause we can do something, doesn't mean we should" "We already have lots of ethics in tech, why do we need MORE?" <awkward silence>

That's a bit too terse for me to understand you.

You’re thinking of ethics as a thing you can trade off against other values, like one of many departments in a company. Indeed if you had an “ethics department”, it would be a compliance department, and I’d worry about overfunding it relative to others.

I’d interpret the student as saying they want to be a technologist who is ethical, not a specialist in the theory of ethics applied to technology. If it was the latter I might agree with you.

The student definitely wanted to specialize in the topic of the intersection of ethics and tech.

Oh, then I do agree that we can have too many people with that academic specialty; in fact having too many ethicists is unethical!
