I think a lot of it is *signaling* social status, support, friendships, group membership, and so on. The choice to spend your time that way is a costly signal, especially when publicly visible.

if no surprises, then it's usually some form of mutual-soothing + rapport building. even ideological "enemies" or "opponents" can do this; I've witnessed some people arguing with each other on facebook predictably and "pointlessly" for years
