To a useful approximation, humans want to be comfy, healthy, fed, warm, respected, and loved. But I think a better approximation is that humans try to avoid being open to criticism. They work harder at blocking others' criticisms than they do at any other goal.

It's a "critical rationality"/Karl Popper thing. Roughly, a "problem" is any kind of a contradiction or incompatibility, and a "criticism" is noticing a problem. Finding and resolving problems is a very general activity; for instance, most entertainment is problem-solving.

(Virtually all games are puzzle games, in structure if not in name. Part of what we enjoy about fiction, TV, and movies is trying to figure out the plot and having our expectations subverted; that's part of the appeal of music too, the dance of pattern and surprise.)

You can have playful, friendly critique that's not seen as a real social threat. (Play is related to aggression, of course, but it's contained aggression that people & animals seek out willingly, not something they spend infinite effort avoiding.)
