glanced at r/streamentry again last night, looking for guides on metta I still don't understand seeking the *total* absence of "craving" as indicated in their beginner guide it feels critical to *remaining alive,* to have tension between what you want and what you have

An experienced meditator friend once explained it by distinguishing "wanting" from "clinging". Clinging is a mental flavor, a sort of desperate grasping. The idea isn't to stop *wanting* things, but to experience calm wanting without any of the grasping clinging flavor.

I think “there is conflict between my wants and reality” is the inextricable-part-of-being-alive thing, and having *meta*-conflict *about* this fact is the supposedly avoidable thing that we mean by “suffering”
