Forgiveness is a weird concept when you think about it. Actions have consequences; you can’t magically erase them. How can forgiveness mean something other than pretending a falsehood is true?
Most actions you regret don’t have anyone specific to apologize or make amends to, though.

Then I guess you have to forgive yourself? You do that by a similar process to apologizing, except that it happens internally. You figure out what you did wrong and why, acknowledge the harm caused, and commit to changing your behavior in the future.

An apology to someone else is mostly just doing that, and then communicating clearly and honestly enough so that they are convinced that you did it.
