I guess you're right. When I read the books, I conflated that scene with the social-morality instruction "be brave" or "be tough" or "master your emotions". I wasn't thinking about the perspective that would *originate* those instructions.

There's a big difference between "this is what the grownups make me do, so I'll do it, and even learn to say I believe in it" and "wow, I can see what it's like to be the person who has the idea in the first place."
