I like a lot of people involved in crypto, but I have a policy of not gambling nontrivial amounts of money (including financial speculation.) Can anyone suggest crypto networks or projects that are good to participate in but *don't* require appreciable amounts of $$$ wagered?

IMHO there really isn't such a thing. There are a couple neat things to pay attention to, or that you might reasonably do development work on if that's your thing, but I think "participation" is overrated.

Corollary: as best I can tell, all the projects that want your non-financial "participation" are selling snake oil.

Bitcoin is interesting. Lightning Network is worth following. Putting some pocket change into Bitcoin for the educational value of understanding how the pieces work a little better is probably a good use of time and money if you're curious about it all.

The work on sidechains (Drivechain in particular) is worth paying some attention to. Prediction markets will be super neat when Bitcoin Hivemind manages to go live.

Ah, I'm nowhere near qualified to do development work on these. I'm mostly intrigued by claims that you can use blockchains to establish new forms of collaboration & incentive systems.
