There's gitcoin. It's a crypto project in that it creates a common market for funding software work with Ether/Dai (A comparable market set up without crypto would leak lots of value to banks, currency exchanges, and compliance) Do you mean something like that?

IMHO there really isn't such a thing. There are a couple neat things to pay attention to, or that you might reasonably do development work on if that's your thing, but I think "participation" is overrated.

Corollary: as best I can tell, all the projects that want your non-financial "participation" are selling snake oil.

DAI is a stable coin by MakerDAO that is pegged to the USD through a really cool, (mostly) decentralized mechanism. You could just buy some and have it as an emergency fund in case all your accounts are frozen.
