Sometimes I have a crazy intuition like “if people just categorically refused to work with anybody who seemed untrustworthy or “fake” or trying to take advantage, the world would be better.”
True! The best you can do is the best you can do though. Knowing that sociopaths can seem trustworthy, you should use less gameable mechanisms like track records where possible.

The evidence indicates that if you don't have a track record you might as well be throwing darts, at least for trustworthiness. Rudeness and expertise can be measured much more straightforwardly.
