2x2 idea: weird/normal, optimist/pessimist.

Normal Pessimist is like cops and soldiers: “life is harsh and dangerous so stay on the straight-and-narrow; individual whims are a luxury you can’t afford.”

Normal Optimist is like superhero movies, upbeat pop songs, “Everything is fine, or would be if those damn malcontents didn’t make it DIFFICULT! Just like things and don’t dislike things, okay?!”

Weird Pessimist is the malcontents. Edgy, nihilist, sarcastic, making art about how fucked up things are.

Weird Optimist is absurdist whimsy. It seems kind of a missing affect these days, but I remember it from, say, Flaming Lips-era indie pop, or early BoingBoing. “Whee! So random and bizarre! I love it! The squares are missing out!”

I fully expected Weird Optimist to be the general Bay Area startup spirit; “we’re going to revolutionize the world with ML apps, optimized cognition, and fusion energy!” sort of thinking.

You’d think that were true, but I don’t see it lately. First of all, “revolutionize the world with ML” is such a corporate way of putting it that it’s firmly Normal Optimist.

I did see a “whimsical” affect around startups around 2010 (remember that Lobster font?) and certainly things like early social media and filesharing were whimsical and Weird Optimist. Reddit? Hella Weird Optimist.

Burning Man has a lot of Weird Optimist, but contains elements of both Normal Optimist (conventional revelers, the kind who drink alcohol) and Weird Pessimist (anticapitalist radicals who hate how “corporate” SF has become.)
