I assumed that fell under option D. We're just ambitious. So we can't stop working. Also if you stop it means you need to move out of the city. Because otherwise you can't afford staying there. So I think it's mostly caused by everyone wanting to live in the same limited space.

This probably also explains why technology hasn't made our work easier. Why would we not choose to tackle the hardest problems we can and make as much progress as we can?

I’ve frequently observed that consumption and leisure are overlapping now, as are work and leisure, at least for many in each of those cases. Yet it also seems true that they aren’t overlapping for also-increasing numbers of people, hence the perception.
