For example: the US originally promoted a lot of international projects (like NATO or Radio Free Europe) to advance US interests. Today you'll mostly just see idealistic reasons and not strategic ones in popular articles that support these institutions.

This is an excellent point. There is a kind of intellectual vibrancy that *currently* exists on the right wing, but there are great thinkers throughout history who have considered similar issues and are absolutely worth reading.

I think there are just some people who are attracted to contrarian political philosophy. They may try libertarianism for a while and then move on to something edgier.

Or perhaps, in order to entertain libertarian ideas, you need to be the sort willing to adopt unconventional ideas, and some fraction of those people move on to adopting other sets of unconventional ideas.
