Had a whole tweetstorm in my mind about how anti-nationalism is a form of self-hatred. But then I spent hours working outside in the sun & now I'm too tired to write. So instead I'll just be grateful for humanity's progress towards material abundance and knowledge work.
Well, devotion to those values is the kind of patriotism I admire. America as a creedal republic.

The problem is that the word "patriotism" has a lot of baggage attached to it, and I'm not sure it is in fact anything more than a nicer word for "nationalism". Devotion to a system that preserves human rights seems great, but I don't think that's what people usually mean.

That said, one of the most moving essays I've ever read was from a man who grew up in Hungary under communism and managed to get to the US, and he said that he'd always been an American, just one who hadn't been born in the right place.
