I don’t want to come off as too vicious here @s_r_constantin because I think it’s great that you’re raising these concerns, and there are probably several points on which we agree. HOWEVER, the core of your argument - that creative people shouldn’t be regulated - is wildly wrong.https://twitter.com/s_r_constantin/status/1142092807626117120 …

Ok, I'm a little scared to put my reputation at risk by saying this, but I think it's important and I think there's a chance I have enough of a platform that speaking up can matter. So here goes. I'm concerned that the meme of "AI risk" is being perverted to destructive ends.

History had shown us time and time again that innovation without restraint is dangerous, especially for vulnerable populations. Creative and innovative people are in fact not generally great at recognizing the wider and longer-term consequences of what they’re doing.

Self-regulation is a dangerous myth and has been proven so in industry after industry. Not picking on current tech here. I’m no fan of censorship, I’m pro-net neutrality, etc. It’s absolutely true that those who suggest regulating tech have an obligation to learn about the fields

There’s a reason why the core of Kantian ethics is the idea that you can’t make an exception for yourself. None of us is that special. No one is such a creative genius that she/he must be trusted and left alone to do amazing things. Nope, sorry. That always goes wrong. Always.

“Leave us alone, we’re doing mostly good things” - sorry, no. ELSI reviews have outside experts because, to quote another wise man, “you can’t see what’s eating you while you’re being eaten.” You should fight for your innovative space. But ethicists will fight our corner too.

To be clear, I do believe there’s a good-faith debate to be had. The problem isn’t that not everybody agrees; it’s that only one side shows up.

Ah. Clearly we move in different circles. I hear the kinds of arguments you’re making a lot. It’s interesting that there are defenders of civil liberties on both sides, since some tech innovations have put people (again, especially vulnerable populations) & rights at greater risk
