This fits very well with a cultural moment that seems to be crying for "regulate the internet, it's doing things we never expected, and we never elected these techies!"

This creates a sort of "eat me last" dynamic. Technologists who can tell that other social agents want a piece of their "pie" (in terms of both economic resources and governance power) sometimes try to preempt attack by saying "we'll help you regulate cyberspace!"

I'm starting to hear proposals that governments should have backdoors into any sufficiently large assemblage of computing power, on the grounds of AI safety.

Should companies that pollute our air and water be closely regulated? Those that produce our food? I banks? Are tech companies different? A company with the power to disrupt an entire economy or ecosystem or culture should be watched. The grounds of "AI Safety" is irrelevant.

Any government-mandated backdoor will be compromised eventually.

Backdoor is just a scare term.

It’s shorter than ‘government-mandated security vulnerability.’

True. It's also shorter than "We don't want to be regulated at all so how can we PR our way out of it?"

The software industry has to obey the same laws as everyone else. Government-mandated security holes are a bad idea for the same reason it would be a bad idea to mail copies of your keys to everyone who works for the FBI.

The op said she has "heard" about said holes. Said holes may or may not be advisable. But these guys don't want to be regulated at all. These things become metaphors for any kind of oversight.

To be clear, I have heard people advocating backdoors. I'm not making claims about whether backdoors exist; I'm not knowledgeable about that. And, obviously, I'm arguing against oversight/regulation, that's not a secret, I'm quite overt about it.
