AI does have risks, some of them near-term. "Deepfake" autogenerated text and images that look real could industrialize misinformation. There are risks associated with autonomous vehicles and weapons going awry. And of course strong AI could be unimaginably dangerous.

Good points, and yes, this does get very confounded, when for many people "tech" is all one big cognitive blob, but we have everything from AI being used reduce pesticide use and poaching while FB actively poisons society justifying it w/'we're not editors' & 1A rights.

Then, there's the issue of a runaway superintelligence potentially gaining a strategic advantage, which is completely different than using AI to industrialize disinformation. The latter certainly needs to be controlled, yet for the former, I'd doubt any govt could actually do it

Are you saying that anyone who expresses concern about AI risk and suggests that the government may have a role in regulating should called out as rent seeker? There are plenty people on twitter suggesting AI risk may be over-hyped, they just tend not resort name calling.
