Ok, I'm a little scared to put my reputation at risk by saying this, but I think it's important and I think there's a chance I have enough of a platform that speaking up can matter. So here goes. I'm concerned that the meme of "AI risk" is being perverted to destructive ends.

I know: you look kind of weak and not with-it if you say "actually, I think we should be free to do our thing; our thing is mostly good", when you can sense that the currents of power are trending towards illiberalism. But maybe *don't be a weenie*?

Do you *really* want to go from being a creative intellectual to making sure you get a lock on those sweet DOD contracts? Do you really think it's *good* for positive-sum creation to be turned into zero-sum rent-seeking? If not, then maybe say so?

People talk about all sorts of dumb and misguided stuff. There are *so* many open racists on Twitter, for instance. Surely it shouldn't be scarier to say "rent-seeking is bad" than to say the far more heinous stuff that "politically incorrect" culture warriors do?

There are people asking questions and trying to uncover the actionable side of high level platitudes. I don't mind pushing back https://medium.com/@sd_marlow/fictional-values-of-ai-810b867fe570 …

I can't help but wonder if a great many are siding with more oversight/regulation, because they're currently in positions to reap the windfall of helping with write the regulations or influence them so their company comes out on top. Cronyism at its worst.

There has been a lot of noise by privacy/free software advocates for like twenty years now, and it has been mostly ignored? It's becoming harder to distribute/install free software. End users don't control their data even if they use a free browser.

But if you help the .gov "regulate cyberspace" you might get them to mandate your users to use .gov issued ID online, or to use certified software. You might get an official seal of approval that people can't just stick into their home-compiled code.

These are good questions to start learning more. I can share more info on societal risks. I think the dialogue around these issues is a giant spectrum and it is vast and a lot of it holds opposing views. if you are for civil liberties etc you're might want to start with EFF

ref to the twitter response/debate around OpenAI's GPT-2 non-release decision. Very much agree people need to examine the motivations of those calling for regulation though do also see this happening and encourage it.

There's no pushback because it simply isn't possible to regulate software like that. Bjt if you tried, companies would just migrate elsewhere with sensical laws. There's always some nutjob congressmen who's pushing a bill to do something totally absurd and outlandish.
