Crazy idea to reform bad incentives in science: treat lab technicians and lab engineers (i.e. employees, usually with undergrad degrees but no PhD) more like scientists.

A lot of companies that don’t create prestige and advancement tracks for individual contributors run into the same dynamic — everyone is biding their time to be a manager, and truly great ICs have no path to financial and status rewards while still being an IC

De facto science nowadays seems to be run as if the goal were simply to maximize headcount, regardless of whether the heads are doing anything, and regardless of their being miserable. (Probably this is too cynical.)

This. But also attitude. As a software engineer currently pursuing a new degree in data science it makes me *mad* when they say an analyst's/data scientist's code doesn't have to be good because it's never going in production and if it does, it will be rewritten by software guys.

Except that none of that is true: pressure is high, deadlines are tight, and when you just want to have it kinda-sorta work, someone *will* shove that experimental R script into prod by calling it through exec… And when it comes to the software engineers:
