Unions for graduate students are not a good idea:https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-06-12/university-of-chicago-walkout-keep-unions-out-of-grad-school?srnd=opinion …

When I was being pitched on joining the graduate student union, I was concerned that insisting on more benefits for grad students would cause the school to admit fewer. Didn't seem to parse.

In particular, they were advocating lavish mental health benefits. I thought this might lead departments to simply refuse to admit anyone they suspected of having a mental condition. The unionizers' response was 'well, they wouldn't be allowed to do that.' *headdesk*

“I was worried if they paid them fairly and gave them mental health benefits, which they should be doing, they might admit fewer” If they can’t pay them fairly now, should they be hiring more? Also there is clear evidence grad students face higher rates of mental health problems

grad school is what creates grad students’ “mental conditions” so how could unis predict that? “Lavish” should not be a descriptor of a health plan that is trying to get graduate students to stop thinking about suicide.https://amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/576769/ …

In Spain there are student 'unions' (I was in one of them)but we did everything a union does other than pushing for money (providing info, helping navigate academic bureaucracy, raise complaints, and provide some public goods like a notes library). In this form, I think they're good

Yes it is good for people with mental health issues to not have benefits. Great take Sarah!

So actually existing graduate students with mental health issues should be denied care because *maybe* faculty would somehow divine mental health status of applicants and secretly discriminate on that basis? No, that doesn't really parse for me, I have to say.

Sarah, the minute you look at university operating budgets & spending behaviors your realize they absolutely have the money to afford health care that covers therapy & prescriptions meds. They can’t admit fewer graduate workers but they can pay us better & provide better benefits
