So how do scientists gain knowledge, if not by using the scientific method?pic.twitter.com/KaSVdLklhh

I'm quite happy to adopt "y'know, thinking, doing, learning, the way you would if you actually gave a shit" as a formal definition of "The Scientific Method"
Actually caring about the phenomenon is the key, I think. https://meaningness.com/metablog/upgrade-your-cargo-cult …pic.twitter.com/nFvACnAVv7
There are a lot of philosophical or ideological movements that seem to give an overly fancy name to "just...thinking and acting, on purpose, like a person". This is actually necessary, because sometimes people *don't*. But the theories are just pointers to a wordless thing.
I think re the scientific method one should better call it the scientific attitude, or the scientific mood, or mindset, it sounds more like what happens, as described in your conversation
The claim that that's a method is false, though. I think the technical phrase you're looking for - for actually trying to learn about a thing rather than just pretending to - is "non-fraudulent research."
you're right that it's not a method, though I was happy to chalk it up to loose use of language. "non-fraudulent research" doesn't work though; people can be thinking/doing/learning, or not, when they're not doing research at all.
The Scientific Method as taught in school refers to something like this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothetico-deductive_model … This is not the same thing as "thinking, doing, learning." It's taught as a truth-magic ritual.
I always thought it meant - 'Let reality guide your actions rather than your half-baked ideas and biases. At least test!'. Most of the time.
