A king can't really consume all that much except for huge harems, in which case you get massive dynastic disputes via harem intrigue that wipe out most of the king's reproductive advantage, like in Persia. So special privileges asymmetrically protect the king from downside.

And that's exactly what you DON'T want for skin in the game. Downside's the most important part! If you're out of the game you're out of the game forever.

Agreed, I think. Most of what's salient to me is the difference between "not consuming" and "consuming", while you seem to be paying more attention to the difference between "consuming some" and "consuming so much that it distorts the game".

I'm starting from the assumption that you shouldn't ration anyone's consumption beyond objective scarcity constraints, and then boosting the king's *relative* consumption needs to be justified as a departure from that.

The situation I'm thinking of is something like a startup: large upside in case of success, perhaps also risks in case of failure. Someone leading such a project should get a larger percentage of the winnings and bear a larger portion of the risks than the average contributor.

Should I expect this to be more optimal for startups than for pirate ships? If so, why?

it seems pretty much the same setup as a pirate ship, right? (sailors get a share of the proceeds, captain gets a higher-than-average share)

Sometimes captain actually just gets an average share, I think. In any case, median allocation to captain has to be higher than median allocation to average pirate, since captain probably never gets a below-average share.

But my guess is way less unequal than the relative allocation for startups.

I wouldn't be surprised if the optimal distribution of shares to incentivize people to contribute was more equal than it typically is in startups.

OK cool I think we agree here - my only real objection was the connotation that startups rather than pirate ships were a natural thing to ... anchor on.

Pirate codes range from 1.5x share to 5x share (or 10x share relative to the "boys"), sometimes also compensation for use of the ship if the captain owns it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_code …
