Yea, that definitely makes sense. One thing to point out is that "R&D" is often quite grunt work, less lab coat - industrial engineers / technicians doing what 50 years ago they might have booked as indirect labor, etc. I'm thinking of tooling, sys. int., etc.

oh, I know. my coworker used to be a welder for the auto industry. he's brilliant at prototyping lab equipment. lab coat & grunt work overlap.
