Would argue this is a result of doing biology. Every molecular biologist has had dozens of failed hypotheses based on what appeared to be sound logic at the time, that turned out to be bullshit, because most of the time biology isn't very logical.
Causal inference in biology is *hard,* much harder than in physics. In some cases it may be easier, but there is a certain amount of learned helplessness, based on brutal experience. We don't trust mechanism free hypotheses, because even *with* a mechanism our hypotheses fail.
