It's hard to describe the shock to someone who doesn't work this way. Thankfully I recovered the backpack and notebook today (just finished photographing the 50% not previously photographed). Bad news is laptop has gone.

Pros & cons of old tech: my notebooks are indispensable for recording field visits in muddy wet places. Recto for notes in the moment, verso for reflection on notes later. Dreadful shock to have my backpack with notebook & laptop stolen on Saturday.

Saving wetlands is an essential part of ending biodiversity loss. Find out how we can reverse their loss in our new Crossroads blog for :

Nicely put, and wetlands are also fascinating, mysterious, resistant to prying eyes, refuges from grasping hands, and beautiful. Towers of clouds doubled in a deptheless mirror you skim across in your tiny boat at dawn, hidden worlds beneath ... hard to beat

It's ! Wetlands are amongst the most biodiverse and economically valuable ecosystems. Our October 2018 issue featured an Editorial by 's & Nick Davidson on why it's time to tackle wetland loss:

As a crocodile researcher who grew up in wetlands and loves them, I couldn't agree more. If you've read John McNeill's book Something New under the Sun, you'll know the shocking historical stats on wetlands loss.

Most research shows that increasing hunting actually increases human wildlife conflict. Less adult males means more young individuals navigating the landscape. Like the familiar human teenager, young cougars can also be trouble makers.

Also, in the context of proposed 'universal bans', bans should focus on commercial buying & selling of bushmeat rather than subsistence use. Finally: I was specifically contacted about calls by conservationists for a lasting universal ban. This due to my comments on Ebola in 2014

Some distinctions possibly worth making: - wildlife endangered by use vs not, - conservation problems from health risks (sometimes there's overlap, sometimes not) - using animals for food vs using animals for magic / medicine - commercial from subsistence use

Of course not everything I said got in: omitted- many wild animals eaten as 'bushmeat' are fast-breeding crop-eating (potential pest) species. It's mainly larger bodied slow-breeding animals that are at risk, when it comes to mammals, tho there are of course exceptions.
