    : we have erroneously mixed up debates on sustainable finance & energy scenarios. Gas & nuclear will play a role in the transition, but they are not green - and can be financed in any case. By including them, the taxonomy will now just not be a 'gold standard'

    Not many things make me very angry but asking people to forgo outdoor exercise, which causes no pollution and is important for mental and physical health, and yet imposing no curbs on driving at times of very high air pollution is infuriating.

    Coal in West Virginia has caused mining accidents, black lung, an opioid epidemic & soaring electricity rates. Senator Joe Manchin doesn't care. Coal is making him rich. Tragically for us all, the fate of the Earth's climate rests in his corrupt hands.

    On earlier arguing that we must maintain our commitment to green investment and net zero which can enhance domestic supply- our dependence on ever expensive imported gas (up 400% in 2021) is driving up bills. More gas is not the answer to a gas crisis.

    Truly appalling that commentators are blaming renewables for spiralling gas prices. 38% of the UK's gas demand is from domestic heating. The main solution is therefore improving the energy efficiency of British homes, which would also mainly benefit those living in fuel poverty.

    Opinion: Energy prices will keep on rising. Why? We may not like it, but too many governments have jumped the gun on renewables — thinking that we can phase out fossil fuels in favour of unreliable renewable energy significantly faster than we actually can

    The reason some will struggle to afford heating this winter is because European gas prices increased by 400% in 2021. Fuel poverty and clean energy levies by contrast were roughly flat in 2021. To protect people from future gas price shocks, we need to reduce our gas dependence.

    In modern Britain, green taxes and pushes for net zero mean we’re having serious conversations about the most vulnerable going without heat and light. That should be a fear reserved for Dickens, not Johnson.

    Great 🧵 on the history of 'development', with useful lessons for climate action. 🌏 Transformation to low-carbon, climate-resilient societies will demand changes to physical capital, human capabilities, policies *and* institutions, guided by robust & context-specific evidence.

    While at DFID I would provide new Sec of State an "Introduction to Development". By touching on evolution of diff approaches to development I sought to explain the need for diff parts of DFID & inoculate against claims of simple fixes. Thread 1/n
