Simplified COVID-19 testing using isothermal amplification (LAMP): easier to perform, even without expensive lab equipment, and very scalable. See our new paper (with and VL Dao Thi) in Science Translational Medicine.

We are happy to share a preprint containing a protocol for SARS-CoV-2 RNA extraction from swab samples using magnetic beads in 96-well format. Thanks a lot to many Ph.D. students and people involved in this project ,

Fascinating that we can now *see* how the SARS-CoV-2 virus assembles itself in the cell. Preprint with cryo-EM tomography by an Bartenschlager labs:

Die "Corona-Warn-App" ist endlich fertig. Ich finde, wir sollten sie alle installieren, denn sie könnte wirklich helfen, Covid unter Kontrolle zu halten. Ich denke, die verwendete Methode wahrt den Datenschutz doch so gut wie es eben möglich ist. 1/2

Please consider downloading the German "Corona Warn App" for proximity tracing if you live in Germany. Having read the 's quite critical assessment of the data protection risks (), at least I nevertheless feel the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.

Different subclones of a patient's cancer react differently to treatment: how to study this, combining patient material, single-cell RNA-Seq, and in-vitro assays? See our new Nature Cell Biology paper:

How can we quickly test large numbers of people for Covid-19? Is RT-LAMP an option? In Heidelberg, we have tested this assay on hundreds of patient samples:

In my 7 days on one of our (now 12!) non ICU units, I admitted 58 patients for COVID rule out, of whom 50 tested positive. Two died (DNR), 2 went to hospice, and 5 went to the ICU. That is… not my typical gen med service week. Following, some clinical observations.
