Bizarre experience on this transatlantic flight I'm on. I reclined my seat to sleep and the grown man behind me started violently shaking and kicking my seat, and refused to stop until a flight attendant told him to. Then his wife loudly declared that I was a sociopath.
He isn't even very tall AFAICT. He just has a bag under the seat where his legs should be. I would happily discuss the reclining politely with someone - I don't want to make tall people uncomfortable, though I do need to sleep - but really taken aback by that reaction.

Thank you to the excellent crew member at who was firm with him and calmed the situation down. He and his wife said I was "running to teacher" by asking her to deal with the situation. Must be a very difficult job dealing with people like that - it is appreciated!

Btw, I did have some sympathy if the overhead lockers were full so he had no choice but to put his suitcase under the seat, taking up his leg room. But I’ve just checked and the locker above us is totally empty! This whole situation is *entirely* self-inflicted by him. Loopy!

This isn’t about whether reclining is good or bad, but separately I wonder how many anti-recliners have (a) politely asked the person in front of them not to lean back or (b) offered them a small sum of money not to? So much bottled-up resentment that a quick chat could avoid.

Not on my current income / wealth levels, but if I was richer, sure. Mainly for the lie-down bed for overnight flights.

do people not know that if the person in front reclines their seat they can just recline their own seat and problem solved

Yep that’s more or less how I do it. OTOH I recognise that sometimes people on short-haul flights need to sleep.
