A sugar cube contains 12 calories. A 28g slice of cheese contains the equivalent of 9 sugar cubes' worth of calories. Photos like this that show "shocking" amounts of sugar in sugary drinks prey on people's ignorance of how low in calories sugar actually is.pic.twitter.com/9kydroXZda

Unfortunately there is a myth put about by people like Gary Taubes that sugar defies the laws of themodynamics to produce more energy than it actually contains. The dietary equivalent of believing in perpetual motion machines. Sadly this is now the basis of govt policy.

Please stop sending me unevidenced Taubes stuff about sugar and insulin. Increased sugar intake doesn't cause fatness beyond the energy content – https://www.bmj.com/content/346/bmj.e7492 …. The evidence does not support the carbohydrate-insulin model of obsesity – http://www.stephanguyenet.com/why-the-carbohydrate-insulin-model-of-obesity-is-probably-wrong-a-supplementary-reply-to-ebbeling-and-ludwigs-jama-article/ …

I haven't read all the second link - which seems to be more naunced - but the bmj study doesn't contradict the basic sugar/insulin hypothesis.

I may be wrong but my understanding of the first meta-study is that the excess weight gains that are observed are explainable by the increase in calories, not by a metabolic effect – no?pic.twitter.com/go2dPDgLNn

So the general insulin story at 5th grade level is that insulin makes you more hungry and sugar (potentially) spikes insulin levels. It causes you to eat more. Now more sophisticated takes are that it causes you to put on fat which causes blood sugar to drop which causes hunger.

The study explicitly states it doesn't address insulin and acknowledges the insulin connection. Sam didn't read all of it.pic.twitter.com/dfsbz0GKK6

It doesn't address that because there's no residual to address. The weight gain is explainable by the energy content of the sugar.

Which...is my point. Sugar has other issues besides calories: its impact on insulin is greater than fat and more detrimental to the body. At least afaik.

OK – if you're arguing that sugar is unhealthy for reasons besides its effect on fatness, I'm happy to be neutral there and maintain an open mind. My objection is to the idea that sugar is unusually fattening.

That’s a bit of a straw man though, isn’t it? Where does Taubes state that sugar causes weight gain beyond the calorific content?

It seems to me that his point is that calories do not equal calories and that fat / sugar / proteine of the same calorie content can have quite different effects

No one is claiming sugar is breaking the laws of thermodynamics, bro. If that's where your argument hinges, you're about 20 years behind the conversation.

Sugar has been around for centuries. Obesity epidemic has been around only a few decades. Seems like it's not sugar itself that's the problem.
