My studio started preparing for this eventuality weeks earlier, ensuring adequate bandwidth and VPN connections. When the announcement was made, the focus was to ensure people felt safe and had the resources they needed.

I personally stood on the floor telling anyone that hadn’t checked email or slack that they could work from home now, and pointed them to resources. Our leaders kept their eye on ensuring everyone felt like we were doing our best to get them the resources they needed to WFH

There is a time for measuring productivity and ensuring the right tasks are being closed and the jiras are being cleaned. This was not that day. The work is far from done, but from the top down today was about making sure we were comfortable and safe.

This is what leadership looks like, this is what people centric companies are. I can’t help but think of studios that claim they’re people centric but fail at realising that all their employees are people too.

I’m tired, but super happy to work with people who think of our community first. Clever people will manage work, will focus on the task at hand, but it will feel comfortable, because our colleagues took the time to make sure we settled in well first. I hope yours did too.
