Four out of eight chapters of our book on fairness and machine learning are now available—halfway there! The newly released chapter is on testing systems for discrimination.. A few thoughts in this thread on why you might find this interesting and useful.

👋Good news alert!👋 I'm *thrilled* to share that my article "The Ethics of Aesthetics" has been accepted for publication in The Information Society. In it, I argue that addressing the impacts of digital tech requires interventions into data practices *and* physical tool design.

In other words, the law requires that Apple provide Jamie Heinemeier Hansson the actual and specific reasons for denying her application for a credit limit increase.

And note that Regulation B forbids creditors from simply saying that "the algorithm said so":

Soooo… if Jamie Heinemeier Hansson actually *applied* for an increase in her credit limit and Apple refused, Apple was legally required to offer an adverse action notice.

From what I can tell, a creditor doesn't need to offer an adverse action notice when first offering credit with a specific credit limit. The requirement is only triggered when a person applies for an increase or when the creditor decides to decrease a person's existing limit.

For what it’s worth, the say that an adverse action notice must accompany “a refusal to increase the amount of credit available to an applicant who has made an application for an increase”
